Mel Hill

Always a welcome visitor to the Trumpet !. Mel plays music that we all know and love, mostly from shows, musicals etc. (He's a pretty decent singer too ! )

He also does a Jazz show on Radio Stoke .

Log on to Mel's site at: www.bbc.co.uk/england/radiostoke/mel_hill.shtml  to find out all about it.

Trevor Emeny.trevor.jpg (16665 bytes)

Trevor has a lovely mellow sound,  is very  inventive, and a competent flutist/flautist (please yourself). He usually appears with Archie Cotterell, Derek Brown and Barry Watts . Trevor is equally happy in either small outfits or big bands.

Derek Brown

Derek has a wonderful 'fluid' style, and makes it look so easy.derek.jpg (52059 bytes)

He's a bloody good reader, and one night played the Bach Tocata and Fugue in D minor , (Sky version ) faultlessly, while reading the 'dots' over Eddie Pearce's shoulder ! (we also 'mangled' Mozart a bit too that night).

Steve   Pacitto.                                                       What can you say about this man?. A virtuoso of the squeezebox! (name the song, he'll play it). Steve's fingers seem to zip over the keys like butterfly's wings !!

Reg Keirle

A pianist with a style difficult to describe, but a very enjoyable one .! Singer of baudy songs, teller of jokes, and a very talented artist.  (His sketches adorn the walls of the Trumpet).

corbet.jpg (30689 bytes)Bryan Corbett

A very exciting musician, one of the bright younger stars, playing a variety of styles, with a leaning toward modern jazz with his Quintet.        Sound

John Burnett's Jazz Bandits   burnett.jpg (273019 bytes)           Talented sextet playing a wide range of music and even including the occasional sing song !!      Sound

The 'Bandits' are a very happy , fun loving band, and that comunicates !

                             Barry Watts.

A superb drummist , capable of playing in any style he so chooses, and a very welcome visitor to the Trumpet !! . Barry (as do most expert drummers) seems as though he could easily read the newspaper and STILL turn out a faultless performance !

    Mike Owen.

Mike could be called the 'Guinness of 'bone' players, so smooth...he's also double jointed, (must be , because one night in the trumpet, he played the Trombone with his FEET!!...either that, or he's got bloody BIG lips !!)   Sound

    Crazy Rhythm.

crazy.jpg (57169 bytes)

The talent of these  three musicians has to be heard to be believed. A masterly command  of their interpretations of the great composers. For more info and sound bites, log on to their website at:

Europa Jazz Band.

Just five of them, but what a big band sound these guys kick out thanks to Steve's magic squeezebox!!.  ( It boils the water for the coffee too) .

    Archie Cotterell.

A very suave and debonair Archarchie.jpg (53681 bytes)ie , (our Archie). He excels in the faster songs, in fact, it was once said of Archie, if he had written Tolstoy's 'War and Peace',  he would have completed it in a WEEK !!. Archie is among the best of the pianists at the Trumpet, and widely known in jazz circles for his versatility.

John Sparry

sparry2.jpg (171326 bytes)John is a well liked regular visitor to the Trumpet with his band. He is an excellent vibraphone exponent, wit, and mine of useful information on the 'Black Country'. He loves long winded, excruciating 'shaggy dog' stories which from time to time, he inflicts upon us !!

Bill Bickerton is a very talented pianisBILLBICK.JPG (23482 bytes)t who's been around for a few years now. He was one of the originals, along with Tom Burton and Reg Keirle that kicked off the jazz scene here in the 60's. Bill is the regular pianist with Swing Parade and appears on a regular basis with them at the Trumpet, plus other venues.

Tony Caldicot.                                                             Tony has been the resident percussionist with Swing Parade since it's inception, way back when...and along with Mike Turner, Bill tony.jpg (65256 bytes)Bickerton, Ted Rowley and Brian Casson is a founder member. He adapts very easily to the style of whichever band he is appearing with. Tony is a much respected musician.

                                                                             Mike Turner.

The leader of 'Swing Paraturner.jpg (215663 bytes)de', and along with Bill Bickerton , Tony Caldicott , Ted Rowley and Brian Casson,  a founder member. Mike plays soprano sax and clarinet equally well, as is demonstrated by the fact that the Trumpet is always packed for their Friday night residency.

keith.jpg (47077 bytes)  Keith Bill.

Keith is a very fine player of the Bill Evans style, a regular at the Trumpet, and always very welcome here.

Ably accompanied by Ron Thomas (Bass) & Leroy Brown (drums) , its always a good night !!
